Create Opportunities

Definition: To me, opportunities lead to success and I tend to agree with Roger Tate who said "The secrets to success are hard work and luck."

Criteria: Persistent, hard working, ever forward, guided by the desire to advance others.

Situation: I entered Texas A&M wanting to become plugged into an organization as soon as possible, yet found myself failing to find my niche. My freshman year, whenever I was chosen as an RA in Hobby hall, I was exhilarated by the opportunity to express myself in a capacity where I could help others lead better, healthier lives! However, I had no idea this was only the beginning.

Task: As an RA, my task was to bring all of the residents together to create a community which promoted educational success and inclusion as well as providing a enjoyable place to live. As the years progressed, my task shifted as I took on additional responsibilities through my RA position. My floor partner, Chris, pushed me to apply to Residence Hall Staff Council as an officer of the RAs. After a year in the council, I had become passionate about this organization and I knew I had to apply as President.

Action:  Determined to fulfill these roles through the years, I worked with resilience to serve those I was responsible to while also keeping up with my coursework and friendships. A determination which led to even more opportunities.

Result: Upon my arrival to College Station in August, I was greeted with a door decoration stuck to my door with the initials SRA on them. SRA stands for Senior Resident Advisor, but it seemed out of place since Hobby has never had a an SRA before. I soon learned the position was created by my new supervisor since Hobby would be joining forces with the nearby Neeley hall!

Takeaway: As I reflect on my experiences, it is hard to see them as the result of anything but hard work and divine intervention. My promotion to SRA was unexpected, as I did not even apply to the position, yet it gave me a sense of accomplishment. The time and energy I invested in my residents and in RHSC culminated into an earned reputation for myself, which luckily, lead to the promotion.
