Panama Global Business Brigades (GBB)

What?

When I heard about the Texas A&M Global Business Brigade trip to Panama, I knew this opportunity was once in a lifetime. However, upon arrival in Panama, I found myself second guessing my decision as it was taking me well outside my comfort zone as well as the U.S. for the first time. As a more reserved person, new situations and people challenge me and I typically observe my environment to form an idea of where I best fit. So, a week long trip to a foreign country definitely brought a bit of stress with it!

So What?

Upon arrival to the Impeti Embera, the community in Panama my cohort served, we were welcomed with tremendous sincerity and open-mindedness by each community member. It was clear they truly wanted to learn and improve their businesses. From that day forward I became inspired by their work ethic and the importance they placed on education, and strived to create quality presentations and business solutions for them. During our time in Panama, we taught accounting practices, inventory methods, as well as general math knowledge and it forced me to think about all of the education I have received in my lifetime. Their attitude toward learning, and consequently toward their businesses, was motivating because they have so fewer accommodations than most Americans yet higher spirits.

Now What?

The Panamanians I interacted with grew my appreciation of the experiences and education I have received in my lifetime and instilled a need within me to share them when appropriate. Also, each person illustrated a beautiful picture of a welcoming and teachable individual. In my opinion, the Panamanians had many reasons to distrust or question us, yet they took a stance of gratitude and openness which is unrivaled. Going forward in new situations, I realized how important it is to channel my inner Panamanian and approach situations with a readiness to learn and work.

This picture was taken with the business my group was assigned, Kiosco Rachell, after we implemented a new inventory system.
